About Made Here

Made Here, a project of Hennepin Theatre Trust, is a walkable urban art experience that connects people to local art and artists in the West Downtown Minneapolis Cultural District.

It is also about possibilities.

Twice per year, Made Here fills windows and other underused spaces throughout the WeDo Cultural District with art made by local artists. The project has grown from visual displays in windows to live performances, artist markets, pop-up galleries and more.

In every instance, the intent is to infuse underused public spaces with art and art-inspired experiences – and transform them with the spirit of what is possible.

Made Here also makes artistry possible. Anyone with a creative spark is invited to submit an idea for a window display. No resume or portfolio is required. A community panel of people from a range of disciplines selects participating artists with an eye toward diversifying the number of male and female visual artists, and those from communities of colors.

The result is an unheard-of array of creative energy turned loose in public spaces throughout downtown.

A brief sampling of visual displays and activities past and present includes:

  • A paper maché circus in a skyway-level window
  • A mini art gallery in public space located in the new Mayo Clinic Square – bringing arts and sports medicine under one roof
  • A “mood llama” made up of 320 LED lights that changed colors to reflect the emotional content expressed on Twitter
  • A flowing “Peace Piece” white gown patched together with a range of materials to represent the artist’s own evolution and that of her family’s

Since it launched in 2013, Made Here has produced 336 window displays in commercial spaces, making it the largest initiative of its kind in the country. And that presence has mattered. Seven downtown commercial spaces that had a combined vacancy rate of more than 35 years were leased within 12 months of participating in Made Here.

Made Here is made possible by the generosity of many supporters. The presenting sponsor of Made Here is Andersen Windows. Additional sponsorship support is provided by Le Meridien Chambers Minneapolis.
